Hughes Meats was established in 1974 as a butchery concession in a North Wales wholesale outlet and soon gained a reputation for excellence, quality and value.  Within a few years, it moved to its own site on the outskirts of Bangor, North Wales and its customer base expanded to include foodservice and retail outlets.

In 1994 it moved to its current location, a purpose built, state of the art, meat cutting plant on Bangor's Llandegai Industrial Estate.  The company has dedicated low and high risk areas, producing raw meat, bacon and gammons along with its own ready to eat meats, cooked on the premises.  The company's customers now include the public sector (all of the hospitals in North Wales and four of the six LEA's), wholesalers, retailers including independents and the national chains, and foodservice customers including some prestigioushotels and restaurants.  Geographically, the company covers North Wales and North West England, delivering to its customers in its fleet of refrigerated vehicles.

The company is certified by STS as a public sector supplier and is regulated by the Meat Hygiene Service.  The company is also a PGI certified supplier of Welsh Beef and Welsh Lamb.  Hughes Meats are now working towards gaining SALSA and BRC accreditation.

Hughes Meats operates a full Food Safety and Quality Management System set out in accordance with the British Retail Consortium's Global Standard for Food Safety (version 5).  The safety, quality and legality of the food is of paramount importance to the company and it employs a full time Quality Assurance Manager who has developed and implemented the Food Safety and Quality Management System.  The company also employs the services of an external Food Safety Consultant to provide advice and guidance and to monitor the systems.

Hughes Meats works with its customers as partners and always endeavours to add value to the service and products it supplies.  This has been recognised twice in recent years with the company winning a gold at the Wales True Taste Awards for its work with the National Health Service and in reaching the finals of the 2010 Community Partnerships Awards for its work in delivering locally sourced meat to schools in North Wales.

Going forward, the company seeks to create new partnerships in the private, public and voluntary sectors in order to deliver excellence, quality and value for money for its customers.

Hughes Meat Company Ltd has been appointed as a supplier to the TPL Fresh / Frozen Meat & Poultry Contract to supply Welsh LEAs only.
